What a whirlwind these last few weeks have been! My last blog post was a pregnancy log at 37 weeks and our sweet little girl was born at exactly 38 weeks. She was a small but healthy 6 lbs 5 ounces and 17.5 inches long. My husband and I have learned so much over the course of her life so far and have worked as an amazing team together. The dogs adjusted well and have embraced our new routine which consists of late night feedings and wakings.
For those that read my pets + child safety article, we incorporated many of those tips when we first introduced the baby to our dogs. My husband brought home a baby blanket from the hospital a couple days prior to her arrival. The dogs were found sleeping on it and when she arrived they immediately smelled her and howled in excitement. I truly do think they associated the smell in advance and were better prepared because of this. We also ensured we each greeted the dogs first upon our arrival from the hospital. We did not introduce the baby until we each individually came in the door and greeted them per our usual routine. We then brought her in (while still in her car seat) and let them smell her and become familiar with our new addition. You can see the full video here of their reaction – it’s pretty precious!
While I was absolutely sleep deprived, I was determined to document her with the dogs in her first 7 days of life. With the help of my amazing husband, we managed to capture some sweet moments as shown in the photos below. She is now 3 weeks old and we are still taking videos and photos every chance we can. It is so true that babies grow up too fast and we already see how the weeks are flying by.
The dogs are so gentle and protective over her already. In fact, we usually find them taking turns watching over her in various locations every day. When she cries, they immediately run to her attention and ensure we are aware of her needs. They are wonderful assistants during my days at home on maternity leave from my day job.
Because I’ve been blessed to recover quickly after a short and uncomplicated labor of only 5 hours, I am feeling up to photo shoots and offering some specials in the coming months.
